“Sailing South: A Windy (or Not) Adventure
Ahoy there, fellow adventurers! 🏴☠️ It was August 5th, and our trusty crew was setting sail from Coruña, aiming for sunnier shores down south, closer to the Canary Islands. The weather forecast promised calm winds in the morning, so we optimistically departed from the marina at 9 AM, hoping for a gentle breeze to carry us away. But, as luck would have it, the wind gods decided to take a day off, and we found ourselves in the dreaded “no wind” zone. It’s like we have a special talent for finding the windless pockets of the sea!
As we sailed, we couldn’t help but notice that we weren’t alone in this windless conundrum. The fellow sailors around us were also stuck in the same windless predicament, just drifting along, with not a sail in sight!
.
Eventually, we arrive at our destination around 6 PM, where we dropped anchor, fired up the oven, stowed away our sails, tidied up the deck, and popped a mouthwatering pizza into the oven. (The Spanish do know how to make a nice pre-made pizza) Well, it was time to finish off that bottle of wine (for Ian) I’d opened two days ago and some Gin and Tonic (for me). Cheers!
.
From our vantage point at anchor, the town looked absolutely adorable. It’s funny how sometimes, a place can surprise you. This little spot didn’t feel like Spain at all! We were itching to explore but had to wait for the weather’s permission. You see, we’d strategically moved here due to the north-easterly winds scheduled to arrive at 8 PM and stick around for the next couple of days. Mother Nature’s plans are non-negotiable!
When the weather finally cooperated, we made our way to the next anchorage. My mission on this particular day? Landfall, to procure fuel for our trusty tender.
.
Our journey has a rhythm of its own. We tend to stay put for 2-4 days at each location, and what we do there varies. Sometimes, it’s all about chilling on the boat and tackling those never-ending boat jobs. Other times, we’re eager to explore the shores, depending on how we’re feeling and how much sleep we need. After all, we’re still recovering from over a decade in the aviation world.
.
So, fellow adventurers, here’s to the unpredictable winds, delightful pizzas, and the freedom to chart our own course! 🌍
